Bristol
Charities was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1835, to administer
a range of 57 almshouse and grant giving charities, formerly under
the control of the Corporation of Bristol. The oldest dates back

Today,
the organisation is focusing upon its activities for Bristol’s
older people, through the provision of day services and housing
– it currently manages a residential/nursing home and six
of the city’s almshouses, providing accommodation for 120
people.

It
operates a day services provision, for older people, at the Beehive
Centre in the St. George area of the city. This provides valuable
day care services and activities for 120 older people per week.
Plans are being developed for a network of similar services across

Bristol
Charities also administers a number of major grant-giving charities,
for the relief of people in need, as well as educational charities.

Charities also provides management services to a variety of local

recent times, Bristol Charities has assumed the management responsibility
of other charities, including the Bristol & Anchor Almshouse
Charity, and the Lady Haberfield’s Almshouse Charity. It has
worked with other charities, who were encountering difficulties,
and has enabled their activities to continue.

Charities works with individuals who wish to establish permanent
endowments for specific grant giving or other charitable activities.

Day-to-day running of Bristol Charities and its services is carried
out by a small professional team – the majority of whom are
working directly with individual clients – headed by Chief Executive
David Jones. Overseeing this work is a board of Directors.
